Tinubu Clears Nigeria’s $50m ECOWAS Levies for the First Time in 19 Years
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fully paid Nigeria’s outstanding levies to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the first time in 19 years. The payments, totaling ?85 billion and $54 million, cover Nigeria’s 2023 obligations and extend to July 2024. ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray announced the milestone during the 66th ECOWAS Summit in Abuja, lauding Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to the regional bloc. Touray noted that several member countries have fallen behind on levy remittances, but Nigeria’s fulfillment of its obligations underscores a renewed confidence in ECOWAS under Tinubu’s leadership. He expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s timely payment, highlighting it as a significant contribution to strengthening the community. Presiding over the summit as ECOWAS Chairman, Tinubu emphasized the importance of unity among member states to address global and regional challenges, including violent extremism, environmental issues, and ongoing crises in regions like Sudan and the Middle East. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to the shared vision of a strong and resilient West African community.
